Wagga Champions League Basketball (CLB) 3×3 stalwart Zac Maloney is confident the event will prove itself worthy of being a long term fixture on the competition’s calendar when it is held at Wagga Beach on December 12 and 13.

This year’s event is the final instalment of a three year deal, and it also set the stage for the newly formed Riverina Bobcats to compete in the elite division for the first time.

“The Bobcats will fall under the elites program and hopefully there’s a fair few teams from Sydney that come down as well and have a run,” Wagga Heat player Maloney said.

“We want them to go to as many events as possible that have the elite category, to go around them and start building points as a club.”

Maloney believes COVID will benefit the event, with the league unable to host many rounds at this time of year in the past.

“The biggest thing to play in our favour will actually be the COVID break. I’m pretty sure CLB3x3 hasn’t been able to host as many events as they’d like this time of year,” he said.

“There’ll be interest from local areas and teams that go away for the events will hopefully be looking to travel down here. I know they’ve got a couple of teams from Sydney that are looking to travel.

“It’s the third year CLB has been here and each year it’s grown and been bigger than the last. Wagga is one of their favourite places to come, we’re looking to go bigger than we did last year.”

Matches will be held across junior, senior and elite divisions.
